A Bride and a Locomotive

We had an awesome shoot in mid August at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. It was a collaboration with 4 different parties putting forth their time to make some really awesome photographs. Our model, Nicole Gaines, toughed out the 100+ heat in the roundhouse to create these wonderful shots while our friends Clint Renegar and BJ Preddy helped with some additional lighting and steam effects.

The Beloved Dearly

Lacey & Cody Engagement Session

We will have the joy and honor of photographing Lacey and Cody's wedding this fall and we had a great time doing our engagement session with this energetic and fun loving couple. We did the session at a few locations around Hickory, NC and we could not have asked for better weather! The coolest part about doing the engagement session and eventually bridal and wedding is the fact that Brandi and Lacey have known each other for years and Cody and I knew each other during middle school. Working with them seems more like bonding with old friends then it does "work".

For several weeks now Brandi and I have discussed the idea of lowering the pricing on all of our portrait session's. There were several reasons that played into this decision and honestly the biggest reason that drove us to lower our pricing on portrait sessions is the economy in our area. At this time so many people are out of work and those that are working are still finding it hard to make ends meet. We hope that with our new pricing structure everyone will have a chance to be able to afford high quality portraits that capture the moments and people you cherish!

At the end of last week we finally decided on a new pricing structure and wanted to let all of you know about it! Full details can be found on our "investment" page, but to make a quick summary pricing now begins at $80 for a portrait session, approximately 50% off the previous costs. We also reduced the prices on our senior portrait session packages as well. Our engagement session with Michael and Kim was far from ordinary. First off, it was scheduled at the last minute, which was not that big of a deal, the only day and time they could do it was fortunately the only day and time that Brandi and I had available that week. The unfortunate part was that the meteorologists were unsure if it was going to rain, or snow that day. When they scheduled their shoot with Brandi I told her "tell them that regardless of what the weather is we will do the shoot."

That might come off as being a little arrogant to some people but in my mind I was hoping for and imagining snow to help create something cute. If it turned out to be rain instead we could still do something cute and different, after all we shot this awesome portrait last year in the rain. Shooting during "inclement" weather can produce some fantastic results, I have never understood why some photographers only shoot on sunny days.

The day started out with light snow turning into heavy snow right before their engagement session, we did the session at McGalliard Falls Park in Valdese, NC. The session was short and sweet (cold and wet) but we got some awesome shots, in particular this one by Brandi.

Diary Queen Days

We recently had the honor to photograph the dress rehearsal of "Dairy Queen Days", by Robert Inman presented by the Foothills Performing Arts. For a brief summary of what the play is about check out Robert Inman's Website.

Foothills Performing Arts has been around Caldwell County for the last 33 years. They are located in building "B" on the campus of Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in Hudson, NC.

Keep an eye out for more blogs featuring performances by the FPA in the coming months as we will be working with them on their next season. Working with the FPA has been great so far. For Brandi it has been extra special because she has volunteered with the FPA.

Home from ImagingUSA!

We have been home from ImagingUSA for a few days now.

We had a blast traveling to Nashville and back home to attend the convention and trade show. I had a blast hanging out with friends before and after classes as well as meeting a few awesome people while we were there. Brandi and I attended quite a few seminars taught by the industries leading photographers. We got SEVERAL awesome ideas while we were there and are in the process of implementing several of them into Cherish The Moment Photography, the most noticeable being a Senior Ambassador program, more info about that soon.

I had a blast at the trade show talking to various vendors including some of my favorite that we currently use as well as others that we may use in the future. I got to try out quite a few lenses that I have had my eye on as well which is always fun for a gear nerd such as myself.

ImagingUSA and Nashville

In a few hours Brandi and I will be embarking on a little road trip to Nashville, TN to attend the annual ImagingUSA convention and trade show. ImagingUSA is put on by the PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and is the first trade show and convention of the year. Last year we were fortunate enough to be able to fly to Phoenix, AZ to attend the show and this year we will be driving just "down the road" (7 hours) to Nashville.

We look forward to the different seminars we will attend as well as the trade show where we will get a chance to check out the latest products put out by every vendor imaginable in the photography community. So there is a pretty good chance that we might find some kind of awesome new product or service to add to our current list of products and services that we offer.

We will also get to spend time with other photographer friends while we are in Nashville and our close friends Victoria Bentley and Ben Earp will be tagging along with us making this a road trip that we will not forget!

New Logo, New Look

In September of 2009 Brandi and I were talking about our logo, our website, everything that represents our business besides the two of us personally and our photographs. Though we both really liked our logo and look, we felt that it was not inviting, especially for perspective brides and families who may be quickly turned off by the dark colors and theme on our website.

It was obvious to us then that we would need to seek and try to recreate our image, something that would be easier to do now instead of 2 or 3 years from now. We contacted a friend of ours,Graphic Designer Erin Mann, who created our original logo. We talked about what we were wanting to do and assured her that there was nothing wrong with the original one, but that we wanted to feel more inviting, more friendly. Within a few days we were presented with a few different concepts to look at. Brandi and I talked it over, took a good look at each perspective logo, and agreed on one that we each felt was "the one".

We could not be happier with the work Erin has done in creating our new logo, as well as the help and guidance she has given on the new changes to our website. We feel that the colors really flow together and work better together now, and we have already received a LOT of positive feedback from our photographer piers as well as many of you, our valued clients and friends.

If you are reading this and have visited our website within the past four weeks you have probably noticed the big changes on here. We have completely changed the layout of our website and pages, as well as color schemes, the new logo at the top. We have added some new testimonials and would love to add more, if you have ever worked with us and enjoyed your experience please do not hesitate to share your experience with others!

We have added approximately 100 new images to various galleries and are in the process of adding me. We are backed up in terms of blogging and will be adding more blogs soon!

We still need to redo our about us page, when that is finished we will also have more enhanced FAQ page, as well as a new Pricing information page. We will also be adding a page about the various specials and promotions that we run through out the year!

JB Rocket Concert!

Jack & Jennifer McKinney Wedding

Brandi and I had the honor of photographing a close friends wedding recently. I first met Jennifer and Brandi in a photography class several years ago, the two had known each other for a year or two before I met them. Since then we have been taking photos together everyonce in a while and have gone on a couple really fun trips together as well. Jennifer and Jack got married north of Marion in a beautiful church. After their wedding and reception we headed up to Wisemans View which overlooks the Linville Gorge and shot some awesome portraits of just the two of them.

Grace, Portrait Session

We photographed this portrait session with Grace at the end of Halloween in and around Old Salem, in Winston Salem, NC. For a year or two I have always wanted to photograph some body playing and posing with a violin, especially in a fall like setting. At home here in the foothills the leaves had already fallen and the ones that were left on the trees were dull, luckily for us, the leaves were vibrant in Winston Salem and everything came together perfectly for this portrait session.

Athena & James Porter Wedding

We photographed Athena & James wedding on October 17th in Wilkesboro, NC. It was a small beautiful outdoor wedding held at a local park, the wedding had a fall theme which was very fitting for this time of year. Luckily for everyone attending, the park had a fireplace in it which was used the entire time of the wedding and reception, did I mention it was cold? Athena and James came up with some of the coolest decorations for their wedding and it was a real joy photographing it.

Heather and Kenny Hollifield Wedding

On October 10th we photographed Heather and Kenny's wedding. They chose to get married on property owned be a family friend near the Catawba River in Burke County. Their marriage took place with a beautiful corn field as a backdrop. Instead of a DJ the couple chose to have bagpipers instead! Chip and Dick, "The Two Pipers" played the bagpipes during the ceremony and later on did a toast for the bride and groom.

We photographed Heather and Jeff Duncans wedding on September 12th at an awesome location called Hodgin Valley Farm. This venue is one of the best locations we have ever shot a wedding at, lots of cool little places on the property to do a few portraits as well as their banquet barn that was an awesome place to hold a reception in.

The wedding and reception went great and the weather could not have been more perfect for an outdoors wedding.

Pre Wedding Rituals

Here I sit tonight preparing for our upcoming wedding this Saturday with Heather Jones and Jeff Duncan (check out the engagement blog a few posts back). I am going through the usual routine that I do before I photograph a wedding. Cleaning and charging batteries!

Brandi and I have a total of 6 or 7 lenses that we will use on the day of any given wedding, we have 4 camera bodies, 3 of those are used heavily, the other one mainly as a back up. Each lens has two sides that needs to be cleaned, each camera has a sensor that needs to be cleaned, I try to wipe off the mirror, view finder, and insides of the camera to get as much dust, hair, and other particles out as possible.
I have 8 Canon Camera batteries to charge, then 8 double A batteries to charge. I also have to make sure that all memory cards are formatted and ready to go and that there is enough space on our computers to hold the tremendous amount of data that will be uploaded Saturday night.

Not only that I also have a new HD video camera that I am still reading up on and learning the in's and out's of as we prepare to experiment with video for all of our fall weddings this.

This is the unglamorous side of photography, but at the same time, I enjoy it, gives me a chance to "baby" our equipment and make sure everything is working like it should. Much like a car fanatic waxing and detailing their ride.

Taste Full Beans, Cades Cove Exhibit

On September 8th Brandi and I (Joey) put our work up on the wall of Taste Full Beans in downtown Hickory, NC. This is our 2nd collaborated showing at TFB in addition to the independent showings that each of us have done before.

We decided for this show that we wanted to do something a little different, we wanted to make a theme with our photographs, for this we chose Cades Cove. Cades Cove which is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, near Townsend, holds a special meaning to the two of us. Cades Cove was a place that the two of us visited numerous times at the beginning of our relationship and a place that we vacation in four or five times a year. We usually camp at the campground or stay in a motel in nearby Pigeon Forge. Cades Cove is a nature photographers heaven. Wildlife is abundant in the cove and does not require super telephoto lenses to achieve tightly framed shots of them. There are also lots of old buildings that are in various stages of preservation, each one unique and interesting. It is also an added benefit to escape to a place where you can turn off your cell phone as there is no hope of getting a signal!

Our showing at Taste Full Beans will run through October 17th, after that we hope to move the photographs to another location, though nothing has been finalized yet. All work on display is for sale, we have a variety of matted and frame photographs at various prices, including ultra affordable 8x10's matted for $20 each.

In the middle of May Joseph and I photographed a lovely couple that were preparing to attend prom that evening, Kaitlyn and Cody. We worked with them to do something a little bit "different" than the typical prom portraits, the main difference being that we also shot along this really awesome wall that had graffiti on it. On the other side of the building (out of the sunlight and much more suitable for portraits) the wall had a great brick texture!

Gnats and ticks were a constant pest during the shoot but we toughed it out and got some incredible photographs. Brandi was unable to do this shoot because of some prior arrangements and I was able to quickly put together a small team to assist me with this shoot (you can never have enough help during a bridal session), some close friends of ours Cassie and Ben helped out on this shoot doing various tasks that were needed. Ben, who is also an aspiring photographer, was able to get some great "behind the scene" style shots that I will be posting soon.

Happy Birthday!

On Saturday, April 11th, Brandi and I photographed a birthday party for the daughter of our friend Jennifer. The main reason why we were asked to photograph the party was that Jennifer had told her daughter that she was going to be out of town over her birthday and would not be able to be home to spend her special day with her. In reality Jennifer surprised Dana Leigh at her birthday party and we were there to photograph Dana Leigh's surprised look as her mom showed up. It may have been a "cruel" trick but it definitely had a great outcome!

During the course of the party all of the party goers get a "make up" and play dress up for the afternoon!

Scoobie Doo!

Earlier this week Brandi and I photographed this very large, but extremely friendly Great Dane named Scoobie Doo. We were contacted by his owner, Mr Harper in late March about photographing his dog named Scoobie, he mentioned that it was a Great Dane, but until the day of the shoot I had never seen one in person and did not realize this dog would be almost as big as I am.

We photographed Mary on an extremely cold day in January. Not only was it cold but it was also some what windy that day as well, despite the conditions we manged to get some great photographs.

Merry Christmas

I just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a Merry Christmas, if you do not celebrate Christmas, then Happy Holidays, and if you do not celebrate anything at all, I hope you have a great week.

We shot Cassie recently with a Christmas theme. Just to answer the question that may be asked: "How do you get the lights to look like that?" First of all, I tried to keep Cassie and the lights as far apart from each other as possible. Second, I used my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, for most of the shots I shot around 150mm, and at f/2.8 or f/4. Because of me zooming in on her, as well as my wide open aperture, this helped make the Christmas lights become really blurred and in my opinion, very pleasing to look at. We first started talking about doing a shoot like this back in late September/early October, and I feel that we pulled it off great.

Maggie Evans, Bridal Portrait Session

On October 12th Brandi and I had the honor to work with Maggie Evans to photograph her bridal portraits. The weather could not have been better for the shoot, and the fall color was spectacular, probably the best colors that we have seen in many years. We worked with her near Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

We got quite a few great images from the day, here are a few that stand out from the shoot.
